Architecture
ESCALA is the Spanish word for “scale” and refers to the 30-story building’s architectural presence. In ESCALA, the design team led by renowned residential architect Thoryk Architecture of San Diego, has melded traditional and modern architectural styles to create a unique tower. At street level is a classical motif that complements the historic character of surrounding buildings. Rising from the two-story base is a contemporary glass tower with sleek, rounded ends. The tower, which offers dramatic views of the Space Needle, the rest of the city skyline, the surrounding mountains and Elliott Bay, is designed to accentuate the neighborhood’s other modern towers. In addition, the developer has taken great steps to maintain an impressive and inviting streetscape by providing all below-grade parking.

Building Scope
At 850,000 square feet, the 330-foot-tall ESCALA has become a Northwest landmark. Although it would have been less expensive to build above-grade parking, developers of ESCALA chose to maintain Midtown’s pedestrian flavor by creating an elegant street-level entryway. All parking will be contained in eight floors of subterranean garage that required the second-deepest excavation in city history, second only to that of the 76-story Columbia Center.
Partnership with the Arts
ESCALA and PONCHO are working together to promote art as an essential part of urban living. The duo will focus on showing urban residents that the arts matter—they enrich lives and beautify surroundings. The partnership will continue with ESCALA residents being given the opportunity to interact with Seattle artists and gallery owners, attend arts education seminars and participate in PONCHO events.
